Our Guidance Counsellors Ms. Emer Aherne and Ms. Mairead Deffely offer a supportive role to aid students in making informed personal, educational and careers decisions. They work out of our designated Career Guidance Centre on the ground floor. The centre is open to all students with both computer and library facilities.

The Guidance Department offer both a one-to- one counselling service as well as assistance to students regarding their post secondary school options such as CAO application, advice on third level opportunities, apprenticeships/PLC options/ UK/USA/Europe applications and the world of work.

Empowering Students

One of the most important decisions students will make is that of career choice. Throughout the year they carry out various assessments such as the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) with first years and My Future Choice Eirquest Interest and Aptitude Test in Transition Year to aid with subject choice. The answers produce an online profile and workbook covering a broad range of careers areas.

Students start their career journey in TY and each student registers for the REACH + Careers Portal Programme. This is a blended Career Guidance Programme for Senior Cycle students from TY to 6th year delivered by the School Guidance Counsellor. The programme encourages independent research and helps to support students in making informed career decisions through understanding themselves, the world of education and the world of work. They will create a career portfolio which will contain all their career and course research and this can be assessed anytime from any wi-fi enabled device. Students can log in from the Terenure College Guidance and Counselling page.

They can then carry out research on different career areas along with their work experience, career classes, careers week (with various speakers and teachers subject choice information fair).

The purpose of guidance and counselling in the college is to empower each student to get to know his abilities, skills, talents, interests and values so that when he reaches his final year he will be able to choose a course and plan a career that suits his abilities and needs. Study Skills Seminars, Terenure College Careers Fair, Campus Tours of Universities and trips to career events such as Higher Options take place in both Fifth and Sixth Year.
