TERMUN 2011

TERMUN – the Terenure College Model United Nations Conference – was first held three years ago to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of Terenure College. It quickly established itself as an enjoyable and enlightening occasion, and has now become a regular conference on the MUN tour.

This year (on Saturday 24th September) Terenure College welcomed over 200 young delegates from the various colleges around Dublin to its conference representing 27 different delegations. After a short opening ceremony in the morning, these delegates debated twenty different topics while taking part in seven different committees in the morning and early afternoon, including topics such as: the question of Afghanistan, the question of breaking the stalemate in Middle East, the question of measures to combat child soldiering, the question of violence against women, the threat of cyber warfare, and the question of Palestine. The delegates then met in General Assembly in the late afternoon debating three resolutions which had emerged from earlier in the day.

The Secretaries General were Kevin Moloney and Ruairí Roantree who ran a superb conference. The Heads of Admin & Security were Luke Hughes and Cian McCabe. The Heads of Press were Éanna Morley and Ross Beaton who with a team of journalists and photographers – under the direction of Mr. Michael Shanahan – also produced two editions of the conference newspaper A Point of Information. At the end of the conference, Mr. Darragh McCauley – past pupil – gave an inspiring address to the delegates and Mr. Joe McDonnell (Director of the conference) announced the ‘Outstanding Delegations’ and presented medals to the officers of the conference
