"Young man ‘delighted’ with Leaving Cert points"

"I was delighted when I opened the envelope and saw all my hard work had paid off. I put in a lot of effort and it was all worth it in the end."

And Darragh said the fact all his friends were also working hard to achieve good results in the exams helped him to get through a difficult year that can be extremely stressful.

He said: "All the teachers in Terenure were great throughout the year and really helped us all get good results.

"All my friends were putting in a lot of effort and that helped me do the same."

THE A1 STUDENT

David Fitzgerald attended Terenure College, Dublin and got an A1 in Business last year. He is now studying Commerce and Spanish at UCD.

We were lucky in a way at my school as we had Christmas exams as well as the mocks, so you were studying hard in November and then again in February for the Mocks. At that stage I was doing about 4½ hours of study a night. Out of that I spent at least half an hour on Business.”

“People say the mocks are marked harshly. I think that’s a good thing, really. I’m an ambitious student and I got Bs, which meant that I kept working rather than sitting back.”

THE A1 STUDENT

David Perry is studying Law at TCD. He went to school at Terenure College and got an A1 in History in the Leaving Certificate.

“All the same, it’s quite easy to study History. I’d look at the book and the notes we got in class but then I’d make my own notes. People try to learn from the book but it’s the wrong way to go. You need to make your own notes about the major issues and figure out what you think about them. I practised a lot of essay questions. You need to make sure you get the timing right and that you have the right information in there. Hand your essays up to your teacher to correct and see how you do.”

THE A1 STUDENT

A1 Geography student Emmet O’Donoghue attended Terenure College, Dublin. He is now studying Economics and Finance at UCD.

“This time last year I was getting my field study done, sorting out all the significant points.”

“There are a couple of things that I’d advise people to do in the exam. Make sure that you use all the space provided for diagrams and graphs, and also make sure that the drawings are all relevant.”

“The Mocks did wake everybody up though. I started to really get down to it once they were over.”

“Another guy got a D2 in the mocks and came up to an A1 just by working hard and doing loads of exam questions. All you need to do is keep working.”
