TRANSITION YEAR RADIO PROJECT
2007/2008
Student Talk was such a success last year that the staff at 103.2 Dublin City FM have offered the Transition Year Media Studies class a thirteen week slot on the station.
You can listen to the show every Monday at 1:30pm on 103.2 Dublin City FM. Student Talk deals with issues that directly affect young people such as school, depression and underage drinking. More lighthearted topics such as music and film are also discussed. If you have any ideas for the show you can contact Ms. Hewetson or e-mail those involved at studenttalk@dublincityfm.com.
Last year’s Transition Year students were so impressive that they were offered the chance of hosting the show for the whole year. One of these students, David Kelleher, played such a huge part in researching, presenting and producing the show last year that he has come on board as producer of Student Talk this year. David also produces another show in the station making him the youngest producer in Ireland – What an achievement!
Robbie Daly and all the staff at Dublin City FM have been so good to the Transition Year Media Studies class so join them in supporting the lads and tune in on Monday!
2006/2007
This year Transition Year students have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to take part in a media project in conjunction with 103.2 Anna Livia FM. The idea for the “Student Talk” show was thought of and put into action by Ms. Hewetson. Every Monday at half-past one, you can tune in and hear a half-hour long show hosted by students for students. So far we talked about topics such as alcohol and drugs and their relation to youth discos in Dublin. Also, we have recently interviewed Jim Davis, who is the Endurance Coach for the Irish Athletics Olympics Team. Some of the topics which we are hoping to introduce into the show in the near future are: Terenure College’s Senior and Junior Cup hopes, Ireland’s chances of success going into the Six Nations and the World Cup soon after, and a possible debate in studio between owners of Bondi Beach Club disco and Wesley disco.
On the 24th of January on the show, fellow student James Prendiville and I interviewed Ms. Hewetson about “Student Talk” itself. On the show, she informed us that she hoped that by starting such a project, students may get good experience in real world media events, such as radio shows. I think I can speak for all the students involved, including Byron Smith, Ciaran Traynor, David Kelleher, Matthew Langton – ably supported by the Media Studies Class Researchers, and say thank you to Ms. Hewetson for starting up the show, and we have definitely benefited so far.
