TERENURE COLLEGE HURLING - JUNIOR SCHOOL

Wednesday, 28th of May – the whole school left at 9.30 a.m. for a date with history. Once again Parnell Park beckoned as our Junior School Hurling Team were competing in the Harry Conlon Cup in the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Hurling Finals.

It was a great achievement to reach the final after a good league performance which saw the team top their group and then came through a tough Semi-Final against Scoil Inis Coir.

After winning the semi-final, Parnell Park was the venue for the final against Scoil Aine, Esker. The team captained by Owen Wigglesworth were up for final and put in a few hard training sessions under their Coach Mr. Rory McGrath.

Running out on the Parnell Park pitch in front of their school mates was a great experience.

The team soaked up the atmosphere as they waited for Ref Ken Keoghan to get the game underway.

10.30 a.m. and throw-in. Terenure got off to a dream start with a goal scored by Evan Flynn within the first three minutes but Scoil Aine struck back immediately with a goal so the side level as they battled it out for Honours. Daire Kerr scored next with a goal from a well taken 45. Under pressure, Owen Short and James O’Brien were impressive in defence while forwards Naoise Sudway and Matthew Caffrey – a nephew of Dublin Manager Pillar Caffrey – kept Scoil Aine on their toes.

Half time score was 01-01 to 01-00. The second half was very tense as Terenure and Scoil Aine battled for every ball.

Eventually led by Owen Wigglesworth and with Daire Kerr and Paul O’Sullivan in mid-field, Terenure edged out in front with scores from Daire Kerr and Owen Wigglesworth. The Final Score was Terenure 03-04 to Scoil Aine 01-01.

History was made. Our supporters were ecstatic and cheered loudly as Owen received the Cup. A first Hurling win in Parnell Park for Terenure College.

A great achievement for the whole Squad and their Coach Rory McGrath.

Well done!
