GOLF

Senior Golf

Despite playing some magnificent golf along the way, the Senior Team comprising Captain Ronan Burke (2), A.J. Crinion (6), Jonathan Webster (5) and Conor Croke (7) failed by the narrowest of margins at the Quarterfinal stage of the Leinster Fourball Matchplay Championships. Having won all four of their group matches and accounting for a talented St. Andrew’s outfit at the last sixteen stage, the lads were beaten by one hole by a very strong St. Michael’s team at the Quarterfinal stage. This ended our participation in all competitions for this year with no silverware to show for some great golf.

The lads are to be commended for playing some remarkable golf and particular thanks is due to our Captain Ronan Burke for his immense contribution throughout. We wish Ronan well as he embarks on a full Golf Scholarship to Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina in the United States.

Junior Golf

Our Junior golfers comprising of Jonathan Webster (9), Conor Croke (9) and Darragh Crowley (10) did very well in finishing runners up in the Leister qualifier at Portlaoise Golf Club in March which put them in the six teams to participate in the Leinster Final at Millicent Golf Club in April. On a very tough and long golf course the lads put in a very creditable performance, eventually finishing Third place in Leinster. Not bad in a competition which started out with over seventy schools! Well done to the lads and I’m sure they will continue to make rapid progress in getting those handicaps down to 3 or 4 in the near future.

* The Second Year Golf Competition was held over the month of May with entrants playing (mostly) Pitch and Putt in a knock-out tournament. Matches were played in students own time and the Final was held in the Spawell on Thursday, 31st of May. Congratutions to:

Seán Kenny - Gold Medal
Fiachra Sudway - Silver Medal

We continue to produce a good crop of Juniors,  who, this year, qualified for the Leinster Final. The future looks good. Thank you to all the Golf Clubs who made their facilities available to us throughout the year, especially the Castle Golf Club and Caslewarden Golf Club.

Junior School:

Under the Direction of Deirdre Reid and Aidan O’Reilly, Golf in the Junior School is becoming an enjoyable extra-curricular activity in the third term. Lessons were arranged with Martin Hynes and a Parent/Son outing was held.

Every year we compete in the Castle Schools’ Cup, held in the Castle Golf Club during the month of May. We were the winners of this competitions in its inaugural year of 2005 and We look forward to regaining the title!
