MISSION STATEMENT

Terenure College Junior (Primary) School is a Catholic, Independent, Fee-paying Primary School for the education of boys.

The Mission (core ethos) of the College is contained in the College’s Mission Statement, the preamble to which reads;

Conscious of the mission of Jesus: “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10), we aim to have a school community which is concerned with people as sons and daughters of God. In an atmosphere of welcome and warmth each individual is valued for himself or herself irrespective of ability and achievement. Each and every one learns to grow at different levels – intellectually, spiritually, psychologically, emotionally and physically – through involvement in a balance of academic, religious, cultural and sporting activities.

Application Procedures:

The main point of entry to the Junior School is Third Class. Applications are welcome from Parent(s)/Guardian(s) at any time. Parent(s)/Guardian(s) make application to the College by completing and returning the Junior School application form. Application Forms/Prospectus are available from the College Reception or can be forwarded upon request. Neither the issue of an Application Form nor its completeness guarantees an applicant a place in the Junior School.

The following details of Information will be required during the application/enrolment process:

  • Application Form
  • Birth Certificate
  • Pupil Profile Form
  • Any Educational/Psychological Assessments and Previous School Reports.
  • Form indicating acceptance of School Policies and Regulations.

Parents of applicants for Third Class will be invited to an Information Morning during the academic year prior to entry. This invitation also requests parents/guardians to indicate their intention to pursue their application. Failure to respond to this invitation will be taken as an indication that the parents/guardians no longer wish to proceed with this application and consequently it will be removed from our files.

The College will inform parents/guardians of its decision in regards to their application within 21 days of the date of the Information Morning.

The date on which the application was received in the College will be the date used for the purpose of Date Order Applications.

The College will write to all applicants who do not receive an offer asking them if they wish to be placed on a Waiting List. Further offers of places will be made, as they become available.

Offers are made in the following order:

  • Brothers of present pupils: While there is no automatic entry for siblings, entry to the Junior School is the norm for siblings of children already attending Terenure College Senior or Junior School.
  • Sons of Past Pupils/Members of Staff and sons of persons related to members of the Carmelite Order.
  • Date Order Applications. A cut-off date, after which applications will not be considered, may apply.

It is envisaged that there will be no more then 25 pupils in any Junior School class.

Pupils are assessed fully when they become pupils of the school. This assessment usually takes place in September (of year of entry). The purpose of this Assessment is to help the College establish the educational needs of each child.

The right of admission to the Junior School rests ultimately with the Principal acting on behalf of the Manager. Not withstanding all of the above, the Principal, acting on behalf of the Manager, has the right to refuse admission to the school.

For further information or with any queries parents should contact the Admissions Secretary and/or the Principal of the Junior School.

Applications to classes other than Third Class:

The College Authorities must have as their first concern the welfare of those who are currently pupils of the Junior School and for whom, therefore, Terenure College was their first choice.

College Management will only make an offer of a place in a year other than Third Class after taking due cognisance of the best interests of those who constitute the pupil body of the School. College Management will have due regard as to the effect on class size, the dynamic of a particular group, discipline etc. College Management will only make an offer of such a place where it is considered advisable to do so.

This applies also to those who have left the College and who subsequently wish to return to the College.

Application Forms must be accompanied by the most recent school report from their current/former school. The College may contact this school requesting further relevant information such as attendance, educational progress, special needs etc., in relation to the applicant. The College will also consider the move in the best interests of the student under the following criteria;

  • Consequences of a mid-year transfer
  • Reason for move, such as house move
  • The Manager of the College reserves the right to refuse an application for admission.

Where it is possible to offer places to some, but not all, applicant selection will be through a combination of the concerns raised above and the selection criteria for Third Class where applicable.

Applicants with Special Education Needs:

Meetings with the Special Needs Teacher, the Principal and the parents/guardians will be necessary in order to discuss the applicant’s needs and the school’s suitability and capacity to meet these needs. It may be necessary to defer enrolment until the receipt of the assessment report and or other appropriate information. Admission to the school of an applicant with special needs may be refused if, by virtue of those needs, it would make it impossible, or have a seriously detrimental effect on, the provision of the services of the school to other pupils or would result in more than nominal costs for the College. If the Principal believes that Terenure College cannot provide for the educational needs of an applicant, entry will not be offered. To ensure that applicants can benefit from the educational programmes on offer, assessments and interviews will be carried out.

Code of Discipline and College Regulations:

All parents/guardians receive a copy of our Code of Discipline, College Regulations and Policy Documents. They are required to sign a statement saying they have read and accept them. This statement is retained on the pupil’s personal file in the College.

This Admissions Policy may be updated from time to time. Any subsequent amendments will supercede any previous versions of the Policy.
