Every year up to ten Terenure College students take part in the Young Scientists Exhibition in the RDS.

This year two students took part in the recent Young Scientists’ Exhibition. Jamie Donnelly (5th Year) entered a very interesting project of “Before You Know It – Why Time Flies and the Year Dies”. Dermot Costello (2nd Year) entered “Does Believing in Yourself Make a Difference” and received a Special Commendation. Congratulations to Dermot and his teacher Mr. Nicholas.

During her opening address at this year's Exhibition the President, Mrs. Mary McAleese, gave particular mention to Fr. Tom Burke O.Carm., co-founder of the “Young Scientists’ Exhibition”:
“Mrs McAleese singled out the contribution made by the co-founders of the exhibition, Dr Tony Scott who is a member of the judging panel, and Fr Tom Burke, who died in March 2008.
Mr. Clark asked the President to make a presentation to Fr Burke's brother Edmund Burke before announcing that a student exhibiting at the RDS this year would receive the first €1,000 bursary presented in Fr Burke's name.” – The Irish Times, Pg17 – Science Today, 8th January 2009.

Three students from 5th Year, Rob Conway, David Kelleher and Stephen Rynne had a very interesting project on the “Effect of Seaweed on Soil Fertility”.
In 2007, we were delighted when three of our Fourth Year students, Ian O’Connell, Robert Conway and Stephen Rynne were awarded the prestigious “INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS AWARD” at this year’s BT Young Scientists Exhibition in January. Ian, Robert and Stephen presented an impressive project called “The Flight of the Frisbee” which studied the aerodynamics of Frisbee flight and combined principles of both Physics and Maths! We’ve had considerable success over the years, one of our candidates Donal O’Connell actually winning the Overall Individual Award in 1995 for a magnificent project on Past Earthquakes in these Islands.
