Senior Hurling ‘B’ Final 2011
Terenure College lined out in the Dublin Schools Senior ‘B’ Hurling Championship Final on Tuesday afternoon 15th November 2011 in a sunny O’Toole Park against St Mac Dara’s CC.
After a slow start by both teams on heavy ground, St Mac Dara’s were first off the mark with a brace of points. A superb save after ten minutes by Terenure goalkeeper Evan McDonnell gave his team a great lift. James Roche then goaled for Terenure after latching on to a fine delivery from Kenneth Wigglesworth. Further points were traded and this left the half-time score Terenure 1-02 to St Mac Dara’s 0-04.
St Mac Dara’s made a strong start to the second half with three unanswered points. This was despite the best efforts of Ben McEntee and Thomas Walsh in the middle, who did sterling work and won a lot of breaking ball. Niall O’Sullivan’s puckout wins were also a feature. St Mac Dara’s held a three-point lead after twelve minutes of the second half. It was then that Terenure upped the game and when a long shot from Walsh found the net, Terenure were right back in it. Two minutes later, Terenure had a third goal when substitute Eoin Haddock fired in a low shot from a narrow angle. This really had St Mac Dara’s on the back foot and when Roche added further frees after good work by Daire Kerr and Mark Gilroy, Terenure looked in great shape, leading by four points.
Although the Terenure defence, led by Owen Wigglesworth performed strongly, St Mac Dara’s eventually found that elusive goal right on the sixty-minute mark. It gave the Templeogue lads a huge lift and when they pointed after three minutes of injury time, there was unfortunately no time for Terenure to recover. Final score Terenure College 3-05 to St Mac Dara’s 1-12.
It was a great contest that kept the crowd enthralled to the final whistle.
While defeat always hurts, Terenure must be congratulated on a superb campaign that saw great skill, fighting spirit and tactical awareness displayed on many occasions. The highlight of course, was the semi-final win against Scoil Chaitríona, the holders, on the way to the final. Many thanks to Mr. Traolach Martin and his coaching staff. Well done also to local clubs Ballyboden St Endas, Faughs and Templeogue Synge Street with whom the majority of the players also feature.

This group took their campaign to heart – putting more than enough time into training and really deserve all the honours they won. (The last time this cup came to Terenure College was in 1997).Our under 16 ‘s took second place. They were unlucky as they were edged out by Friends, Lisburn. Friends proved a little too strong for them. Second in Ireland! Well done. Our U14 Div 1 team had a very enjoyable day but were also unfortunate to met a very strong Friend team. This is a enthusiastic team who really enjoyed the season and look forward to next year.Unfortunately, our Under 14’s Div 2 team missed out by a solitary set to achieve second place in Ireland in a closely fought match against Wallace High (Ulster). * Congratulations to Craig Byrne for representing Leinster in the under 15 Celtic Challenge held in Lisburn.* Also congratulations to Adam Jermyn and Graham Doyle who were capped for the Leinster Under 21 to play in Hatfield (London) – one of the prestigious competitions which Leinster are invited to compete against English counties.

HURLING CHAMPIONS - Under 16 Dublin Schools Terenure College 1-18 Templeogue College 1-13 … Terenure College claimed the Dublin Under 16C Hurling Title with a hard fought win over Templeogue College at O’Toole Park. In the end Terenure ran out five point winners but for much of the game it looked like Templeogue would triumph. A goal for Templeogue after ten minutes helped to give them an advantage they held until mid way through the second half. Indeed with five minute to go till half Templeogue led by 1-9 to 0-4 and looked unlikely to surrender their advantage. A late burst from Terenure with points from James Roche, Niall O’Sullivan and Daire Kerr helped to cut the deficit to five points at the break. While Templeogue dominated the midfield area in the first half the opposite was true in the second. Harrison Brewer and Ben McEntee started to take control as points from both play and frees by James Roche brought Terenure back into the game. The turning point of the game was when Terenure scored their only gaol to take the lead for the first time. A long ball from defence was won and finished to the net by the excellent James Roche (Captain). From that point until the end Terenure never let up and further points from Jake Swaine and Thomas Walsh ensured the victory.

Terenure College 0-11 Portmarnock CS 0-05
Terenure College had a strong spine to their team. From Cian Keogh in goal who pulled off some fine saves and full-back Paul Devane who was secure and confident, particularly under high balls. Captain Paul Maguire at centre-half back gave a second half display that lay the foundation for a number of scores that were the turning point of the match.
Adam Jermyn showed skill adn pace a mid-field while Colin Brew brought great physical presence to centre-half forward and scored three point. Ronan Sharkey who, after an early injury, moved to full forward added two more points.
Ian Kenny and Ben McEntee also gave great displays in the half-back line. DAvid Megannety, Shane Faughnan and Barry Mullin were very tight in defence while up front James Roche and NIcky Cosgrave were a constant threat.
All those who played did extremely well showiing great skill and heart on a very wet pitch that made ground hurling almost impressive and presented challenges in controlling the ball. The boys rose to these challenges most impressively and ran out winners by 6 points.

Well done to all!

BADMINTON ... The All-Ireland Badminton Finals were held in Gormanston College on Saturday March 28th. It was on outstanding day for us, both for the excitement of close matches and from the standard of our play. In a full day of excitement Terenure College emerged with a first place in Ireland Under 16’s. Also in the Under 14’s Division 1 final our boys came runners-up. The boys put in a lot of extra training to reached this major event.
Our U14a Team Division 1 – Robbie Neill, Niall Reynolds, Paraic Rowan and Conor Doyle won (5-1) against Royal & Prior (Ulster). However, they were unlucky as they were edged out by Friends, Lisburn in the last game. Friends proved a little too strong for them. Second in Ireland! Well done lads! Last year Robbie was on the successful U14 team in the All-Ireland Finals. With one Gold and one silver All-Ireland medals to date– not bad in your second year in the College.
In the U16 Division 1 Section - Adam Jermyn, Graham Doyle, Rory Curry, Jack Lawler and Mark Lavelle entered the competition as Provincial Champions, they beat Carrigaline Community school (Munster) (6 – 0) in the opening match. In the second and final game all players took on Friends (Lisburn). They played excellent games which led the team to glory with a comprehensive (5- 1) win to secure the All-Ireland Title.
Last year Adam, Graham and Rory were runners-up against Friends in the U16’s All-Ireland finals. Adam and Rory have accumulated two Gold and one Silver medals in their four years here in the College, Graham with 2 Gold and one Silver in his three years, Jack and Mark with 2 Gold All-Ireland Medals in their two years. All the players are looking very hopeful for the future.

* Final of Leinster Schools Junior Cup Championship *
Congratulations to our Junior Cup Team on their victory in the Leinster Schools Junior Cup Competition.
It was a wonderful Cup Season with 8 enthralling Cup Matches. Great skill, lots of good rugby, and impressive strength of character. Memories that will last a long time .. poignant moments of a school community united in grief. The fantastic atmosphere of the Senior Final in the RDS. A wonderfully talented team that gave their all for Terenure, played great matches and made us very proud. A week later a Junior Final with a team that had an extra ordinary commitment to sticking to what is right, to doing what is hard, to keeping on working even when there did not seem to be much hope, when it was not possible to see where hope could come from. The last minute counterattack and try against Belvedere in a match that was lost, the very last minute counterattack and try against Blackrock in a match that was definitely lost, the incredible defence in the 1st half against St. Michaels that could not hold, but did. For adults it would have been impressive, but for 13, 14 and 15 year olds in was unbelievable. The support at all matches was magnificent with a squad of Cheerleaders who were probably the best and most enthusiastic that we have had for a long time. Supporter who never gave up believing that Yes we can! Joy unconfined in the stand in Donnybrook as the Junior Cup was presented to the College after a 20 year wait. A wonderful season!
Well done to our Senior Cup Team on their wonderful performance in this Year's Leinster Schools Senior Cup Final. There was a fantastic atmosphere on St. Patrick's Day for the Senior Final in the RDS. A wonderfully talented team that gave their all for Terenure, played great matches and made us very proud.
